Asia Pacific Yo-Yo Championships 2009 will be postponed

Dear members of the Spinning community,

We are aware of the enthusiasm and excitement that everyone has for the Asia Pacific Yo-yo Championships, also affectionately known as "AP". There has been a lot of speculation about where and when it will be held and this goes to show that the spinning scene has been thriving, serving a great motivation for us all.

Our initial plan was to continue this year following the success of 2008 where everyone had a great time. However, due to adverse economic conditions, it has been an uphill battle for our organising team to secure an appropriate venue and sponsorships from corporate sponsors. One of the main problems was because AP was traditionally held in the festive peak season, clashing with several other major events. This puts us at a disadvantage as we are competing with other more established events for venue and funding.

We have identified this as a yearly problem and we had an early discussion with the leading representatives of participating countries, together with the feedback gathered from previous participants, it seems the solution would be to revamp the event and shift the competition period to an off-peak season of the year. Due to different variations of holidays and exam periods of different countries, our collected information shows that end March will accommodate most people. We understand that some countries may be affected by this shift but we will try our best to fine tune this event constantly.

The organizing team deeply regrets for causing any disappointment for the postponement of AP but we strongly believe this move will be for the better good. We thank you all for the patience and your continuous support. Let us all train hard and gather together in end March 2010 in Singapore to showcase the true spirit of spinning to the World. Further details will be released towards the event.

please help to circulate this information around. If you have any questions regarding this event, please feel free to send them to: info@asiapacyoyo.com

Yours Sincerely,

Colin Wan

Which Yo-Yo, What Style?

So a few of our readers have been posting quite a bit about questions regarding yo-yos and the styles of play their suited for.

[caption id="attachment_1040" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="So which shapes are suitable for which style?"]So which shapes are suitable for which style?[/caption]

Truth be told, although you can technically use one yo-yo to do all styles of play, some do it better than others.

It's like footwear, you can run in slippers if you like, but a pair of shoes would make running easier.

Just like the example above, different yo-yo shapes also help with different styles of play, as we take a brief look today at what shapes are suitable for which style of play...

The Ten-Dollar Mod

So you've purchased a Lyn Fury or Freehand Zero and have been loving it since. We at Spinworkx, along with other online websites, have constantly promoted both yo-yos to be great for beginners to advance level players.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="461" caption="The Freehand Zero and Lyn Fury, two really popular yo-yos for beginners to pro level players"]The Freehand Zero and Lyn Fury, two really popular yo-yos for beginners to pro level players[/caption]

YET...it's been awhile now, and you feel that it's time you take it to a new level. As a beginner, you start to feel that it's time for you to upgrade and get a new yo-yo. But wait...you're low on cash, and the next best thing cost up to $60 or more, what now???

Well, here's two modifications you can do to either the Lyn Fury or Freehand Zero to make it play better.

The best part? They only cost your 10 bucks...read on.

Yomega Stocks are In, including the Saber Raider!

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="307" caption="The Yomega Saber Raider, a butterfly variation of the Raider"]The Yomega Saber Raider, a butterfly variation of the Raider[/caption]

It's not often we carry a classic at the shop, but with the hype around the Super Yoyo cartoons, we figured we'd bring it in! The Saber Raider, a butterfly version of the popular Yomega Raider.

Our New Chillout Joint

Due to the recent increase in yo-yo players coming to the shop on Saturdays and Sundays, we have managed to secure a place at the Sky Garden where you guys can hang out instead of the Spinworkx Store due to the potential risks and dangers of playing in a confined space.

[caption id="attachment_1012" align="aligncenter" width="333" caption="The Sky Garden is located at the 3rd floor, 2 mins away from the Spinworkx Store"]The Sky Garden is located at the 3rd floor, 2 mins away from the Spinworkx Store[/caption]

For future regular meetings at the shop, please do refrain from playing outside the shop and use the Sky Garden instead, we would like to keep the store front a hazard free zone for our staff to assist the younger kids who may be exposed to unintended danger from *GASP!* flying yo-yos =)

Cheers guys and thanks for understanding!

Spinworkx Yoyo Review: Lord of the Rims - Spinworkx Exclusive!

For the past few years, the YoyoJam Dark Magic has been receiving tonnes of excellent reviews from beginners to professional-level yo-yoers.

BUT, is it the ONLY metal rim yo-yo available on the market that provides a good mix of price and performance? Today we take a look at other metal rim alternatives that serve up an equally reasonable price tag, with playability that can rival YoyoJam Master, Andre Boulay's signature yo-yo.

Spinworkx Yoyo Review: Raider EX - "Ex" marks the spot

Mention the letters "RTR" to any hobbyist and the words "Ready To Run" come to mind.

"Ready To Run" is a term used to normally describe a hobby kit that is simply...ready to play out of the box, or at times, about 90% built and requires little assembling before it can be used.

When Yomega Raiders first became popular among Double A players, it took a lot of effort to set them up to achieve that "sweet spot" that made looping with them a breeze.

[caption id="attachment_978" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="The Raider EX, Yomega's answer to a "fuss-free" professional looper"]The Raider EX, Yomega's answer to an [/caption]

At around 2008, Yomega launched a new type of Raider, one that required little modification in order to be suitable for professional 2-handed yo-yo play.

Spinworkx Yoyo Review: YoyoJam Lyn Fury - Five Years of Fury

Back in 2004, I was standing at the front entrance of the World Yo-Yo Contest in Florida waiting for Duncan Crew Singapore legend Hans when Glasseye, leader of the infamous DXL Crew, walked up to me and slipped something into my hand.

"Congratulations..." he said, "...welcome aboard"

Those were the words any kid would dream to hear! DXL? For REAL?!?!?! I was overjoyed, and glad to be part of a team that is made up of some of the best players in the world.

As the great leader turns and slowly walks away to meet up with the others in the crowd, I lifted my hand to see the yo-yo that he had given me.

[caption id="attachment_962" align="aligncenter" width="400" caption="YoyoJam Lyn Fury - DXL Edition"]YoyoJam Lyn Fury - DXL Edition[/caption]

"A Lyn Fury? Why...isn't this the full plastic version of the Hitman?" I thought to myself.

I gave the yo-yo a spin, and in an instant, my eyes lit up.

"OMG! THIS IS AMAZING!"

------------------------

Slap, Smack, and Zip back to the present. It's been 5 years since the Lyn Fury made its debut, and although most yo-yos which last in the market this long would be considered "Old and Outdated", this SGD$25 yo-yo was what Takeshi Matsuura used on stage during the 2008 World Yo-Yo Contest to win the Gold Medal for the 5A category.

Today, we look closer at the Lyn Fury, one of the best plastics in the market which fetches a price that rivals almost all high end plastic yo-yos in the market right now.
